Angelic Roles as Messengers and Guardians
One of the key ministries of angels to man is that of messengers. They announced the birth of John the Baptist (Luke 1:13), the birth of Jesus to Mary (Luke 1:34-35), the birth of Jesus to the shepherds (Luke 2:10-14), the resurrection of Jesus Christ (Luke 24:4-7), and the second coming of Jesus Christ (Acts 1:10-11).
Angels also serve as guardians. The concept of a “guardian angel” is scripturally supported: “The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them” (Psa. 34:7). Matthew 18:10 indicates that angels of little ones always behold the face of God. Individuals who experienced angelic protection include Jacob (Gen. 32:24-32), Israel (Exo. 14:19), Joshua (Josh. 5:14), Elisha (2 Kings 6:17), Abraham and Isaac (Gen. 22:9-12), the psalmist (Psa. 91:11), the three Hebrew children (Dan. 3:28), and Daniel (Dan. 6:22). Christ mentioned He could call “more than twelve legions of angels” for His defense (Matt. 26:53).
