The Nature of Christ – Deity
Jesus Christ performed divine activities, demonstrating His deity. He created (John 1:1-3; Col. 1:16; Heb. 1:1-2), forgave sin (Matt. 9:1-8), and will exercise judgment (2 Tim. 4:1; John 5:22). The Bible portrays Christ’s holiness and the necessity of punishing sin, with John 5:22 stating that God has committed all judgment to the Son. Revelation 19:13-15 vividly depicts Christ’s second coming as a righteous judge.
Christ was worshiped, accepting what men (Acts 10:25-26) and angels (Rev. 22:8-9) refused, indicating His divinity. He also accepted prayers (John 14:13-14) and worship as God (John 5:23; Phil. 2:9-11). Christ had a divine conception (Matt. 1:20; John 8:42), divine names or titles (God, Son of God, Lord, Immanuel), and a divine appearance at will (Luke 9:27-36).
Christ possesses divine characteristics. He is eternal (John 1:1; Heb. 13:8; 1:8; Rev. 1:8), omnipresent (Matt. 18:20; 28:20; John 6:21), omniscient (Luke 6:8; John 1:48; 2:24-25), and omnipotent, as demonstrated by His miracles (Acts 2:22; Matt. 8:27; Mark 1:27; 2:5-10; John 3:2; 9:33). Christ’s miracles revealed truth, demonstrated His deity (John 20:30-31), drew attention to His message (John 6:26-27), and showed His sovereignty (Heb. 2:3-4). All of Christ’s miracles were acts of mercy, with many being miracles of healing. He is also immutable (Heb. 1:12; 7:24; 13:8).
