The Nature of Christ – Humanity
The Lord Jesus Christ is both perfect God and perfect man, fully God and fully man. While some cults overemphasize Christ’s humanity to the detriment of His deity, the Scriptures teach both. As a perfect man, Jesus can empathize with our struggles, and as perfect God, He could die for the sins of the world. Jesus Christ was a man, born of Mary (Matt. 1:18, 2:11, 13:5) from the seed of a woman (Gen. 3:15; Gal. 4:4), though without a human father. He had human names: Jesus, Son of Man, Jesus of Nazareth, and The Man Christ Jesus.
Jesus had a human appearance, being Jewish (John 4:9; 20:14-15; 21:4-5). He possessed the essential elements of a physical nature—body (John 19:38-40), soul (Mark 14:34), and spirit (John 13:21). He experienced human sinless infirmities such as hunger (Matt. 4:2), thirst (John 19:28), fatigue (Matt. 8:24), weariness (John 4:6), and agony (Luke 22:44). Jesus also developed in the usual, normal way of human development (Luke 2:40, 52).
Christ exhibited human characteristics like humility and love, demonstrated by washing His disciples’ feet (John 13:14-15) and laying down His life for His friends (John 15:13). Meekness, defined as an attitude of mind opposed to contentiousness, was perfectly exemplified by Jesus (Matt. 11:28-30; 2 Tim. 2:24-25). He was oppressed yet remained silent (Isaiah 53:7), and though having omnipotence, He controlled it with meekness and humility. Jesus also demonstrated balance, shown by His ability to weep over a city (Luke 19:41-44) and moments later cleanse the temple (Luke 19:45-48).
Jesus engaged in human activities, such as prayer (Mark 1:35), work (John 5:17, 36; Matt. 13:54-55; Mark 6:3), and learning (Heb. 5:8; Phil. 2:8; Luke 2:52). Although omniscient as God, as man, He willingly limited His knowledge to learn as a human.
