Purpose and Descriptions of the Church
The church, in its universal and local expressions, is designed to fulfill several purposes. One primary purpose is to glorify God (Eph. 3:21). The church is called to exalt God through its worship, service, and witness. Another purpose is to edify its membership (Eph. 4:11-12), with leaders equipping the saints for ministry.
The church is also to purify its membership (Eph. 5:25-27; 1 Cor. 5:4, 7), evangelize the world (Matt. 28:19-20), and retard corruption in the world (Matt. 5:13).
Descriptions of the church include: the body of Christ (1 Cor. 12:12-31), emphasizing diversity and unity; the building of Christ, with Christ as the cornerstone (Psa. 118:22; 1 Pet. 2:6-7), builder (Matt. 16:18; Eph. 2:20), and foundation (1 Cor. 3:11); and the bride of Christ (Eph. 5:25-31; John 14:1-3; Rev. 19:7), illustrated by the Song of Solomon.
